As educators and supporters of public education, the Guilford County Association of Educators (GCAE) recognizes that our students’ living conditions are an integral part of their learning conditions. While City Council does not determine budgets or allocate funding for GCS, the Council does implement and fund policies and programs that directly impact students’ quality of life and ability to learn.
GCAE recently hosted a Greensboro Mayoral and City Council At-Large Candidate Forum attended by membership and moderated by NCAE President Mark Jewell. Many of those in attendance filled out candidate comment cards and made recommendations to our Government Relations Committee for endorsements.
The Government Relations Committee met from 9 am until 3 pm on Saturday Oct 21, 2017. They conducted in person interviews, reviewed written responses to our candidate questionnaire, and deliberated over endorsement decisions. Candidates were thoroughly vetted on questions including issues affecting student well being from student homelessness and housing to how we could better work with the Mayor and Council for a pro-public education agenda concerning county and state legislative priorities. While the GR Committee makes final recommendations for political endorsement, we are happy to announce that selections for the Mayoral and At-Large seats match recommendations by membership that attended our Candidate Forum. While we did not host a public forum for District Candidates, we feel our endorsements in the district races reflect the values upheld in the Mayoral and At-Large endorsements.
