As promised, I am posting an update on last night’s Board of Education meeting, which you may even have seen in the news on this ABC45 segment! You can see my back in my Public School Strong shirt in one shot, just in case you were wondering if I made it into the spot.
As you may have read or seen, the Board of Education did swear in Michael Logan to take the District 3 seat after Bill Goebel resigned his position. The District 3 seat has been a source of contention for months, and has even been the focus of targeted state legislation from Jon Hardister.
During public comments, many Public School Strong members and some other supporters spoke about the need for safe, funded schools. A couple of commenters spoke specifically against book bans happening throughout the country and the state. Several commenters mentioned Michael Logan specifically. Overall, commenters thanked the Board for their support of public schools, students, and workers.
I did come prepared to share my comments with the Board, but public comments are time-limited, and I did not make the cut this time. I emailed my comments to BOE members this morning.
Highlights from the Board meeting include a policy update that will bring GCS into compliance with new state laws. Please review these three new policies, and send in your comments during the period of public review, which lasts until October 19. The Board will take a vote on these proposed policy revisions at their November meeting.
And here is the whole meeting video in case you would like to review any fine moments. I do recommend the public comments, as well as Alan Sherouse’s comments at the 2:54 time marker.
Please put the October 17 Board of Education meeting on your calendar, since it is likely that the budget reconciliation vote will take place there.
