Greetings and welcome back! We hope you squeezed everything good out of summer, and are ready to get busy!
You have probably heard the NC General Assembly still has not passed a budget. On June 28, Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed the terrible conference budget proposed by the Republican-controlled House and Senate.
On July 9, Cooper proposed a compromise budget.
Take a look at the proposed compromise. We’re winning! Our work and mass mobilizations of the last two years are working. Gov. Cooper’s proposed budget compromise reflects our five May 1st demands. While it is not ideal to start the school year without a new budget, it is much better than the having to accept a terrible budget as we have had to do in years past.
What does this mean? We need to fight to win what we set out to do on May 1.
How do we do that? We train, organize, and mobilize.
To help us do that work, here are some important dates on the calendar:
What: Hit the Ground Running: Grassroots Organizing Training
Where: 417 Arlington St, Greensboro NC
When: Sat, Sept 7, 10 am- 4 pm
This is how we win. This training will include an overview of the state political landscape, introduction to organizing essentials, and a chance to practice your skills and connect with others who want to work together for better working and learning conditions in NC public schools. Lunch and childcare provided.
What: GCAE Building Rep Training Call
Where: Online video and phone
When: Thurs, Sept 12, 7:30- 8:30 pm
This is a brief training call to update building leaders on our priority tasks as we get this year off to a winning start. This call is for all building leaders and teams.
As always, thank you for all that you do. Public school employees truly make it happen for our students and communities each and every day.
President, Guilford County Association of Educators
